Commencement Speech Resource Center
If you are a speaker at a college, university, or high school graduation ceremony, or in conversation with a prospective graduate, in addition to giving them advice and the benefit of exper ience… ASK THEM TO CONSIDER PUBLIC SERVICE!
According a Council for Excellence in Government survey – released on May 6, 2008 – many have not been asked to serve.
- 60% of 18-29 year olds and 70% of those above age 30 say they have never been asked to consider public service.
The impact of "the ask" could be tremendous.
- 33% of those 18-29 say they would give a great deal of consideration to a request to enter government service if it came from their parents.
- 29% of the same group say they would give a great deal of consideration to a request to enter government service if it came from the newly elected President in 2008.
- And 27% say they would give a great deal of consideration to a request to enter government service if it came from a teacher or professor.
The Appeal of Government Service: Who... What... and How? explores the views of 19-29 year olds-- Millennials -- on politics, government, and public service, in comparison to their over 30 elders.
So whether it is a grade or high school ceremony, or a major college or university commencement (or even a classroom visit or discussion with students), please include a call to public service in your remarks. This website is designed to help you do it!
